Streaming Content to TVs and PCs Using Microsoft Windows Media
Overview: Telekom Austria wanted to encourage potential customers to subscribe to its asymmetric digital subscriber line (ADSL) service by offering Internet-based content that subscribers could appreciate only with a high-speed connection. The service provider decided to stream movies, music, sports, and other premium content over ADSL lines. Viewers could choose from preprogrammed offerings and on-demand offerings, and enjoy the content on either a PC or a television linked to a set-top box. Telecom Austria had to choose a solution for encoding and streaming content - and for reasons of flexibility, cost efficiency, and quality, it chose to deploy its service using Microsoft Windows 2000 Server and Microsoft Windows Media technologies.
